Pozo Negro Hike

The Valencian Mountain Enthusiasts conduct several day hikes in the region.  We chose the Pozo Negro hike.  It's about an hour north of Valencia.  We wound up narrow mountain roads past several quaint villages.  Lots of cyclists... seems they climb up to the top village, have a snack at the cafe and then sail back down.

We started our hike with a break from the drive.  This is Tom Peterson, one of our students.

The hike started out fairly steep.  Plus we hiked along a wide sunny path.  Once we got acclimated, it was fine.  Occasionally, we come across fountain pipes with clear water coming from the hillside. We could fill our water bottles and cool ourselves off.

On our hike we had 2 Dutch visitors who each had tired of the gloomy weather and are working from Valencia until June when the weather in Holland improves.  We had a German visitor who was doing the same.  Fun to see them tease each other.  The German asked so many questions about the quality of the water and is it drinkable.  The guide answered that if you drink the water and don't get sick, it's fine!  I know that the water in Spain is tested regularly and definitely drinkable... but the Dutch finally said, "You are being too German"

The highlight of the hike was the pools.  The first pool was just a small waterfall.

The second was Pozo Negro.  We knew we were getting close when a line of mountain bikers passed us.  And then families and other hikers.  We all converged on the waterfall and pools to have lunch and cool off.  The students loved the diving...

I enjoy watching, but diving is not my thing...

One more water stop and then back to the village

For a well deserved beer (2 euros - beer is cheaper than diet coke)
