Falling in Love with Spanish Wines
Sunday we took a tour of Requena, wine country near Valencia. We had a gorgeous day and two very different but very good winery tours.
Our first tour was at a smaller family winery. The winery is built into a hillside to keep the tanks cooler in the hot Spanish sun. There is a grape here called Bobal, that is unique to this region. It has a very blackberry taste to it. It was unique and delicious. Funny joke they make when they ask what the wine tastes like... Ricardo always jokes, "tastes like bananas!!" Then they all laugh. Must be an inside joke.
The second winery was a large operation. They took us into the caves where wine has been fermented for centuries. Originally built by the Muslims, with urns to store grain. At the end of the Muslim reign, the Spanish started using the caves and urns for fermenting wine. More Bobal wines, along with Grenache and Tempranillo.
We all were impressed with the sinks they have in the tasting room tables to deposit wine and clean your glass for the next tasting.
